5 Home Renovation Ideas to Prepare for before Spring

Its winter right now, and we’re all thinking about spring and all of the wonderful things that you can do when the weather warms up. You might be thinking about leisure activities, such as spending time in your bathing suit on a hot summer day. You might also be thinking about all of the spring renovation projects that you are considering incorporating into your schedule. While many projects can’t be completed until the weather warms up, some can and should be planned a few months before the warmer weather actually hits. When you plan ahead, you won’t feel as rushed, and you’ll be more confident and comfortable with the details of your home project renovations. If you think that this next spring is the year to make a few changes and upgrades, here are five home renovation ideas that you should prepare for, before spring actually arrives.

Room Addition - 5 Home Renovation Ideas to Prepare for before Spring

Room Addition

If you are thinking about adding an extra room for visiting friends, relatives, or kids coming home from college, the middle of winter is probably not the time that you want to do it. Even in fairly temperate climates, the draft is likely to leave you cold. January and February are, however, great months to think about how big you would like the room to be and where on the house you would like the addition. You can also contact a contractor who can tell you what your options are and give you a ballpark figure of how much the addition is likely to cost.

Driveways and Sidewalks

This is an area that isn’t generally seen as the most exciting project, but a resurfaced or new driveway, stoop, or sidewalks can make a house look like it is better maintained. This is a job that really does need to wait until the weather is warmer so that the new concrete or asphalt cures properly. What you can do, right now, is talk to a contractor to find out how much you will need down and if you will need new asphalt or concrete, or if you will just need resurfacing. If there is very little cracking on an asphalt driveway, you might be able to get a resurfacing, which will spruce up the look of your exterior.

Drywall and Painting

While it’s very possible to drywall and paint during the winter, there are added benefits to making these spring home renovation projects, namely, the ability to ventilate, allowing for faster drying times and less lingering smells. If you are planning on dry walling and then painting a room, you will want to make sure there is adequate time between the two processes. Right now, you can choose paint color and figure out how much you will need for supplies.

The Deck

Forbes has it listed as a project for the fall, but refinishing or repairing the deck is also a great project for the spring. Once the air has dried some, you can add a new stain color. Also, if you missed making important repairs, this is prime time to make sure that your deck is safe for you and your family.

Hot Tub or Pool

Have you been thinking about Saturday and Sunday afternoons in a bathing suit? A swimming pool or hot tub are both great additions to a backyard. Swimming pools are great for cooling off quickly, or if you have kids who would enjoy a place to cool off and play. The advantage of hot tubs are that they can be used on most days throughout the year. Who doesn’t enjoy dipping into a steaming hot tub on a 30 degree day? If you choose to get a swimming pool, hot tub, or both, you’ll need to plan out spacing and construction details. Mid-winter through early spring is an optimal time to contact a swimming pool builder so you are ready when you want to break ground.
