Build Strong Foundations and Basements with Ground Stabilization Process

When you are building a basement, it is important for you to be careful and take up necessary precaution, especially if the building is to be constructed on clay soil. The most important step that should be taken by you is the adjustment of the soil’s action.

Strong Basement

It is however advisable that you should not buy a property in the area where the soil is expansive.

Investigate before purchasing a property

If you are investing a large amount of money on the property, then it is necessary that you should check the soil before making a purchase.

Local occurrences of the expansive soil can be easily found in all the maps, which show the categories of soil.

Visit the local building department, as the officials will have knowledge about the kind of soil it has and whether it’s the expansive soil or not. If the answer that you receive is positive than it is necessary to get the soil analyzed.

The process of soil analysis is simple and easy, all you require to do is collect the sample from the area in and around the property and get it tested in the laboratory. This test will show the amount of moisture that the soil contains.

Even if the result of the test done in the laboratory shows positive, you need not lose hope, as  there is a solution to this problem and this is stabilization of the property ground. After stabilization, you can build your dream house without any hassle.

Proper designs

If you are building your home on an expansive soil, you will have to make sure that the designs are done by the professionals. Make sure the design of the plan is followed properly. Pay special attention to the flooring of the house. Also, ensure that the ground around the house is graded properly, as it would help in draining the water from the foundation.

Ways of stabilizing the ground

When you are building the basement on clay ground, it is an essential step for you to make the ground solid, and this can be done by stabilizing it. Using lime for the treatment of the ground will help in stabilizing it, so that the work can be done without any problem.

  • Dig the construction area carefully, removing several inches of the covering soil. Digging should be done three inches apart from the foundation. The digging of the trenches should be done around the foundation’s parameter and in spaced column. The trenches would act as a solid base for your lovely home.
  • After the removal of the earth, the next step would be mixing of water and lime together and pouring it over the area, so that the trenches are filled. Always make sure that the mixture is nice and thick in texture.

Your base is ready once the mixture poured on the ground dries up. This process is necessary before construction of the building, as it would help in saving a large amount of cash, which would otherwise go on yearly maintenance of damages.

Action of the soil

After spending a large amount of money on your basement, you will not want the basement and the foundation of the walls to get cracked within one year due to changes in moisture. The moisture of the soil alters the expansive soil movement.

During autumn, the clay grows, and during winter, it shrinks. This change in the soil can easily be noticed by observing the floor of the basement, where cracks might have appeared. This appearance is especially visible if the area you have been living in has been built over a creek or pond.
