We are all able to identify the basics: sparse furnishings create a minimalist look, overstuffed furniture a cosy feel and so on but what about the more subtle spacial relationships. For example, if you are purchasing new bedroom furniture to revamp you bedroom you may want a particular piece to become the focal point. To do this, you need to make a bold statement and make sure that the rest of the pieces in the room don’t ‘fight’ visually. A huge and ornate four poster bed will look fantastically dramatic in a large bedroom, but needs to be surrounded by plainer furniture to really present it to the greatest effect. In a smaller room you may decide to feature a large, elaborate mirror which will change the proportions of the room through reflections alone.

Translating this into a wall finish I am tempted to marble an end wall using some glittery and super shiny touches so that the overall finish almost moves as it catches the light. Metallic double beds backed by this kind of look will appear to be all at sea and the only safe place in the storm.

It is the foliage and greenery which is particularly captivating however, the leaves are luminous and the grass positively glows. Bringing this overwhelming colour inside is a harder task as only a small quantity will have such a big impact. Nobody wants to be faced by super-king sized mattresses dressed solely in bright green so how about a combination of fresh crisp white with a delicious apple accent?

1. Pure cotton sheets. Natural fibres are more breathable so invest in some good quality cotton and feel the difference.

2. Get knitting. Spend the winter evenings knitting squares to patchwork together into a beautifully cool summer-weight blanket.

3. Come over all floral. Flower patterns are big this season so give your whole room a lift with a summer meadow on your divan beds.
4. Add some throw cushions. If you only have pillows on the beds normally then add some extra cushions for lounging about reading a book on light evenings.

5. Get a counterpane like Grandma. Basically a padded cover or very thin duvet or quilt this is the perfect weight for summer over a loose flat sheet.

6. Go for mix and match layers. If he’s cold and you’re warm then cover up accordingly. The bed will also look eclectic and delightful when not in use.

7. Move the bed nearer to the window and make the most of the breeze. Changing round the furniture can be invigorating on its own too.

8. Add a splash of colour. If you normally have plain white bedding then add a lift and introduce a bright pattern to change the mood.

9. Keep water handy. Stay hydrated during hot summer nights and feel healthier when you awaken refreshed.

10. Invest in an oscillating fan. If all else fails and you are still uncomfortable then try a fan to cool things down.

Taking their musical tastes as a starting point for creating the right look is a great way to get inspired and involve them in the project too. It might be that a certain band, DJ or group is a favourite and they already project a certain image in terms of colour palette and styling. Perhaps a whole musical genre would work better or simply one gig poster or album cover. Whatever the starting point you can build from there: drop the mattresses onto the floor and paint in blacks and greys for a heavy metal fan, introducing a leather chair perhaps and some chrome and glass furniture.

This is a great way to give some freedom of expression whilst creating a design inspired room. The occupant, however slovenly and unmotivated normally, is bound to get on board with the idea and be proud of the results and inspired to tidy up a bit more. You never know, they may even get so carried away they actually pick up a paintbrush and help. Wonders will never cease!

You need to plan a little though! Make sure whatever stripy element you are introducing to the room that first of all the direction of the stripes is intentional and will enhance the space. For example, to create an illusion of height try long, vertically striped curtains which will look dramatic and lead the eye upwards. For width on a narrow floor, try a broad striped rug which will optically push the walls apart – you get the picture.

In the bedroom you don’t want to over do it with colours that are too ‘busy’ and detract from the restful elements of the room. Divan beds covered in rainbow stripes will not be inviting as a place to relax and dark stripes on the walls will over-power. Try something more subtle – maybe wide horizontal stripes in two shades of cream around the walls, accentuated by pictures mounted within the central stripe: very elegant and not at all intrusive to the eye.

Leave the ceiling alone as well! No-one wants to lie back on their mattresses to be assaulted by the view of a stripy ceiling; I really don’t think anyone could make that work. Be careful with upholstery and carpeting as well, as a striped design will quickly date and will then be expensive to replace. And finally, don’t over do it. Counter-act the vibrancy of stripes with plain, simply designed pieces in the room and the whole look will come together much better. If it’s not a right angle it’s a wrong angle!
