Today bunk beds are not only limited for dormitories, ships or army barracks, but they also find their way in homes as sleeping quarters for teens and children alike. Bunk beds, or “double deck beds”, are beds that are stacked to another to serve dual purpose.

For large families, bunk beds are not only space savers but they are amazing pieces for children since sleeping on them is like going on an adventure each night. This is also a good way for siblings to bond. Bunk beds are also much better than sleeping on couches and having back pains. Aside from costing less than buying single beds, there are lots of styles and designs to choose from in the market today.

There are even bunk beds that come with desks for students. The foremost consideration when choosing the right bunk bed is the occupant’s safety. It is a good idea to check if it meets the safety standards, if the guard rails run the length of the bunk on both sides and they fit securely, the mattress fit snugly in the bunk, all the edges and corners of the bed are smooth, check for its stability, if the ladder is easy to climb, and to look at the slats on the bottom to make sure they provide strong support and are securely screwed on the bed frame.

If you are thinking about decorating a bedroom, there are several important factors you should take into consideration before you begin. In order to end up with a bedroom you love the look of, make sure you take your time to get it right. In this article you can find out the most important steps to take before you begin decorating your bedroom, as well as some useful decorating tips for once you start.

Firstly, decide upon a theme. There are many interior décor themes out there to choose from, so the most important thing is to choose one that will reflect your tastes and fit with the look of the rest of your home. If you want to go wild you can choose a Mexican theme or a Wild West theme. Of course, if you are decorating your bedroom first, you can let whatever look you choose for this room dictate the theme of the whole home.

Classic and traditional styles are ideal if you want a homely, warm and welcoming bedroom. Choose key pieces such as antique lamps and cosy rugs to signify the look. Art deco is a quirky and fun look for a bedroom; choose retro children’s beds if you are decorating a young one’s bedroom with this theme. You’ll find a great selection at Sleepmasters.co.uk. If you are after a more modern bedroom, the contemporary design theme is the ideal look for you. Choose monochrome pieces of furniture and art to really finish off the look. The main thing to consider when choosing a look for your bedroom is whether you can live with it day in, day out.

Once you have decided upon a theme, practical considerations should be taken into account. How will you transport the furniture you need? Will you build your own bedroom flat pack bedroom furniture? If the latter, a great tip is to lay out everything in front of you before you begin to ensure no pieces are missing before you start.

When it comes to painting, wear your old clothes and cover the furniture and floor with old sheets and newspaper to avoid any messy painting mishaps.

Finally, leave yourself enough time and enlist the help you need from friends and family. There’s nothing guaranteed to scupper your plans for a beautiful bedroom more than a rushed job.

We’ve had a happy accident in our house: baby number three is on the way and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Having thought we’d got past all those nappies, prams, sleepless nights and baby grows with the older two just at school. Now we’ve got used to the news we are really excited about doing it all again. There is just one problem… we have run out of bedrooms and really aren’t in a position to move house. The only solution is to convince our children to share a bedroom and convert the smallest bedroom into a nursery.

This may not sound too bad as many children share rooms and quite often really enjoy it. However, we have a little boy and a little girl rather than two of the same sex and so the idea is being received with mixed reviews. How do we reconcile pink fairy princess decorating ideas with a love of cars, robots and all things sporty? Bunk beds are an obvious answer to the space issue but this does not tackle the interior design problem.

After a trip to Sleep Masters the small people are very excited about their new beds, and capitalising on this level of enthusiasm I have come up with an idea…In order to create a fantastic bedroom which will keep them both happy we are going for a fairytale castle theme. This may sound a bit girlie but throw in some brave nights on wild horses and a huge fire breathing dragon and the balance is redressed. The whole thing means getting a mural done on all the walls, showing princesses as well of course, but the expense of that is well worth it to see their little faces light up.

Fingers crossed we’ve cracked it – now all I need to do is get them both to sleep! Help…

Whether you’re young or old, single beds can pose many advantages to you. Obviously, as their name suggests, they are a smaller-model bed. This means that regardless of the size of your bedroom, you’ll almost certainly manage to fit a single bed in it.

If you’ve got a spare box room to deck out, or a children’s bedroom, single beds can be extremely handy. As they take up less space, people do tend to buy them for kids primarily, as they don’t need to have as much space to sleep in. And, one of the best things is, if you purchase a single bed for your youngster, they’re not likely to grow out of it for some time to come, meaning less expense for you.

You’re bound to save a fair amount of money in the long run if you buy a single bed, as bedding and accessories are almost always cheaper when you purchase them in a smaller size. There’s usually plenty of bedding perfectly designed for kids as well, in single sizes, whereas this tends to be lacking in the double section.

Even though the bed takes up less space, you don’t need to worry about lack of storage. There are still divan beds in single sizes, so you could check out the selection on offer at http://bensonsforbeds.co.uk to find the perfect bed for your room.

You won’t need to worry about a lack of variety either. You’re bound to find the bed frame and style you want in single sizes.

If you’ve got a small room upstairs in your home and you can’t decide whether to make it into a study or a bedroom, you should definitely remember the benefits of single beds. They’re perfect for fitting in small spaces, so you’ll be able to have guests come to stay whenever you want!

Sometimes only decadence will do in the bedroom, and if you are looking to create an opulent space to rest and recline in then you can’t go far wrong using the colour gold.

Sometimes only decadence will do in the bedroom, and if you are looking to create an opulent space to rest and recline in then you can’t go far wrong using the colour gold. Although a tricky colour to use over a large area, it is a perfect accent hue and can work well with a modern or traditional design scheme. Here are a few ways to add a touch of gold to your bedroom:

In a white or monotone room, hang an ornate gold chandelier over the bed to create a visual centrepiece and beautiful lighting

Add a touch of glamour by introducing gold painted classic French chairs to the room; a pair set in the window will look just perfect.

Paint a feature wall with a matt gold paint or use wallpaper. Position your mattresses facing the wall to admire the effect from the bed.

For high shine gold introduce ornaments or edgings to highlight and draw the eye. Don’t overdo it though or you might need sunglasses!

Compliment plain wood or white bedroom furniture with gold fabrics for curtains or throws: anything goes from old gold to soft, pale yellow.

In a period property pick out original cornices in gold leaf or present a perfectly proportioned door in its best light with gold handles and fittings.

To improve the quality of the light in your bedroom and add romance, hang sheer gold muslin panels at the window and bask in the warmth they create.

A gold framed mirror is the ideal addition to a luxury bedroom. The fancier and bigger the better so go wild and make a statement.

A gilded bed is the most dramatic way of setting the scene in your bedroom. Pile it high with indulgent pillows and throws for the ultimate good nights sleep.

So, what do you think this article might be about then? Hmmm… difficult one… well, not really! Proportion is one of those interior design essentials which many people assess instinctively rather than applying any science, let alone a ruler. The relationship between the size of a space and the things in it is a key factor which will determine the look and feel of any room, regardless of anything else you do with colours or textures and so on.

Photo: These Days Blog

We are all able to identify the basics: sparse furnishings create a minimalist look, overstuffed furniture a cosy feel and so on but what about the more subtle spacial relationships. For example, if you are purchasing new bedroom furniture to revamp you bedroom you may want a particular piece to become the focal point. To do this, you need to make a bold statement and make sure that the rest of the pieces in the room don’t ‘fight’ visually. A huge and ornate four poster bed will look fantastically dramatic in a large bedroom, but needs to be surrounded by plainer furniture to really present it to the greatest effect. In a smaller room you may decide to feature a large, elaborate mirror which will change the proportions of the room through reflections alone.

Mattresses are an interesting one from the point of view of proportion: low down and light indicate a quiet, understated personality inhabiting the bedroom whereas high up and luxuriously deep says ‘climb aboard!’ and hints at a more flamboyant occupant. I bet you are thinking about your own bedroom right now…! If you are chewing your lip then maybe a trip to the furniture store is in order this weekend.

Proportion is as important factor to consider whichever room in your house has come under scrutiny so pay attention to the size and space of all the elements you wish to incorporate and how they will work within the constraints of the available space and you won’t go far wrong.

Well here we are in the middle of another typical British summer and it is raining again. The sky is grey, the lights are on at home in the daytime and the play park is deserted. There is only one inspirational thing to come of it if you as me and that is what all this unwanted water does to the natural colours all around us. Seeing as we are all stuck in the house, thoughts have turned to interior design home improvement projects and I am picking my palette straight out of the window.

Photo: visualpanic

Stone becomes beautiful in the wet: slate takes on a greenier shine, deep red brick is astonishing and all the crystal facets in limestone seem to sparkle. Translating this into a wall finish I am tempted to marble an end wall using some glittery and super shiny touches so that the overall finish almost moves as it catches the light. Metallic double beds backed by this kind of look will appear to be all at sea and the only safe place in the storm.

It is the foliage and greenery which is particularly captivating however, the leaves are luminous and the grass positively glows. Bringing this overwhelming colour inside is a harder task as only a small quantity will have such a big impact. Nobody wants to be faced by super-king sized mattresses dressed solely in bright green so how about a combination of fresh crisp white with a delicious apple accent?

Wherever you draw your next inspiration from, don’t let natures waterlogged state be a hindrance to your creative passions. Whatever the weather there is always something to capture the imagination and turn into a masterpiece so look out of the window and see the world with new eyes – it might just lift your spirits too.

Pure cotton sheets. Natural fibres are more breathable so invest in some good quality cotton and feel the difference.

Get knitting. Spend the winter evenings knitting squares to patchwork together into a beautifully cool summer-weight blanket.

Come over all floral. Flower patterns are big this season so give your whole room a lift with a summer meadow on your divan beds.

If you only have pillows on the beds normally then add some extra cushions for lounging about reading a book on light evenings.

Get a counterpane like Grandma. Basically a padded cover or very thin duvet or quilt this is the perfect weight for summer over a loose flat sheet.

Go for mix and match layers. If he’s cold and you’re warm then cover up accordingly. The bed will also look eclectic and delightful when not in use.

Move the bed nearer to the window and make the most of the breeze. Changing round the furniture can be invigorating on its own too.

Add a splash of colour. If you normally have plain white bedding then add a lift and introduce a bright pattern to change the mood.

Keep water handy. Stay hydrated during hot summer nights and feel healthier when you awaken refreshed.

Invest in an oscillating fan. If all else fails and you are still uncomfortable then try a fan to cool things down.

Well, perhaps not an actual nightclub – but how about a teenager or students bedroom which is inspired by music culture? It is very hard from a decorating perspective to create a room which meets the transition from child to adult without being too old, too young or actually just too patronising. Perhaps at this time in life more than any other though your young adult’s bedroom is more than just a place to sleep and their need for self expression in their own personal space is at its most heightened.

Photo: derMarsmann

Taking their musical tastes as a starting point for creating the right look is a great way to get inspired and involve them in the project too. It might be that a certain band, DJ or group is a favourite and they already project a certain image in terms of colour palette and styling. Perhaps a whole musical genre would work better or simply one gig poster or album cover. Whatever the starting point you can build from there: drop the mattresses onto the floor and paint in blacks and greys for a heavy metal fan, introducing a leather chair perhaps and some chrome and glass furniture.

For something more girlie think pop princess and emulate the Kylie’s of this world with a nod in the direction of glitzy show girl. Feather trimmed lamps and perhaps a canopy over the double beds will look very glamorous. Or maybe your offspring is into dance music and wants something in bright neon’s featuring high gloss clear plastic chairs and pop art inspired prints.

This is a great way to give some freedom of expression whilst creating a design inspired room. The occupant, however slovenly and unmotivated normally, is bound to get on board with the idea and be proud of the results and inspired to tidy up a bit more. You never know, they may even get so carried away they actually pick up a paintbrush and help. Wonders will never cease!

One fashion trend in interior design which is surfacing at the moment is decorating with stripes.

One fashion trend in interior design which is surfacing at the moment is decorating with stripes. This can be off-putting for some people but I personally am a massive fan of all things stripy and think that it is possible to create some really striking rooms with the clever use of stripes.

You need to plan a little though! Make sure whatever stripy element you are introducing to the room that first of all the direction of the stripes is intentional and will enhance the space. For example, to create an illusion of height try long, vertically striped curtains which will look dramatic and lead the eye upwards. For width on a narrow floor, try a broad striped rug which will optically push the walls apart – you get the picture.

In the bedroom you don’t want to over do it with colours that are too ‘busy’ and detract from the restful elements of the room. Divan beds covered in rainbow stripes will not be inviting as a place to relax and dark stripes on the walls will over-power. Try something more subtle – maybe wide horizontal stripes in two shades of cream around the walls, accentuated by pictures mounted within the central stripe: very elegant and not at all intrusive to the eye.

Leave the ceiling alone as well! No-one wants to lie back on their mattresses to be assaulted by the view of a stripy ceiling; I really don’t think anyone could make that work. Be careful with upholstery and carpeting as well, as a striped design will quickly date and will then be expensive to replace. And finally, don’t over do it. Counter-act the vibrancy of stripes with plain, simply designed pieces in the room and the whole look will come together much better. If it’s not a right angle it’s a wrong angle!
