How to Build a Steel Post and Rail Fence in 5 Simple Steps

There is no doubt homeowners are constantly looking to enhance the beauty and durability of their home. At least that is what I wanted when I was looking to make my home more secure and still add to it appearance. One way homeowners can actually protect their home and still add beauty and character to the exterior of their home is by installing steel posts and rail fence.

Steel Post and Rail Fence

Rail fence has its own charm and is often used to mark boundaries of ranches and farms. However, you can even use it to separate your garden or kitchen garden from the rest of the yard. I used it to cordon off the play area for my kids.

While you can take it up as a DIY project, it is always advisable to get a specialist, such as Steel Post and Rail in Australia, to install the fencing. This company also manufactures high quality fencing materials, so you can get the materials and installation done by them. When a professional does the installation, you have peace of mind knowing it will be done right the first time round.

If you want to know the process of building a steel post and rail fence, here are the steps that I followed during the installation process.

Step 1: Local Council Regulations for Fence Building

This is a very important step. Before you begin designing and installing the fence, check with your local council or municipality the rules and regulations covering fence building. There could be zoning laws and height restrictions that you would have to adhere to. You may require permits for the installation. So make sure you apply and get them. These are issues you never have to worry about when you use a professional, as they get all the necessary permits and licenses for the installation.

Step 2: Mark the Boundary of Your Property

Install pegs to mark the boundary of your property. Make sure the pegs are in line, so that your fence will be installed straight. The pegs will function as a roadmap, as you will know where to install the posts and panels. This is also the perfect time to get rid of shrubbery, bushes and grasses along the fence line.

Step 3: Design the Fence

You would need to measure the entire perimeter of your property where you want the fence installed. Note it down. Then mark the areas where you want to ground the steel posts. Make sure you space them out evenly. Then estimate the fencing material and posts you would require.

Step 4: Install the Steel Posts

Mark the spots where you would be installing the steel posts and then begin digging a hole. The depth of the hole is dependent on the soil type, but usually the width is about 2 meters. Place the post into each hole and ground it to the height you want. Pour concrete mix into the hole and let it set. It is best to give the concrete two to three days to cure and get completely firm. Cover the top of the posts with caps. Use a wooden mallet to gently push the caps into place.

Step 5: Install Horizontal Rails and Steel Panels

Install the horizontal rails by screwing them together and to the steel posts. Make sure the rails are leveled during the installation process. Thereafter, screw the steel panels to the horizontal rails. Make sure all the panels are leveled and uniform. Instead of panels, you can also chain links and install them to the steel posts. If you are using chain links, it is important to ensure the links are tightly stretched from one post to the next and they are properly fastened with the right fastening material.

Building a steel post and rail fence is not that difficult, but it definitely is time consuming and requires care when designing and planning. Considering the amount of time, effort and planning that goes into designing and installing the fence, using a professional fencing company is advisable. You can use the aforementioned steps to ensure the fencing company is using the right steps for the installation. So, your knowledge on steel post and rail fence will always come handy.
