Starting with the outside of the house, make sure you don’t leave ladders lying around that could provide easy access to an open, upstairs window when you’re at work or at night time. Large trees also carry the same risk, so make sure any within reaching distance of your home are not tall enough to be used as climbing frames for potential thieves. You can also ensure that the bedroom furniture is not near the window to act as an easy landing place for any spritely burglars. The last thing you want is your brand new bed from http://bensonsforbeds.co.uk becoming a doormat for an eager thief.

Fix motion-detector lights that will be triggered if anyone enters your garden or drive, thus shedding light on any potential burglars and hopefully scaring them off and/or alerting you to a presence.

Make sure your doors are of a high quality to act as a further hindrance to possible pilferers. Solid doors are more secure than those with lots of glass, and double cylinder locks are recommended as the safest lock to choose for your external doors. Of course, you must remember to actually use your locks; the majority of burglars are simply opportunistic and enter through unlocked doors and windows.

You can also employ various techniques to make your home appear occupied when it’s not, whether you’re at work or away on holiday. Timer lights work well as they can be set to come on when it gets dark. Another invaluable tip is to ask neighbours you are friendly with to collect your post if you are going to be away for a while, and to keep a bit of an eye out in general.

In addition, do not advertise the fact that you are going away for a while, i.e. through social networking updates that are not fully locked down so can be viewed by strangers, or by having your home address on your luggage where it could be spotted by fellow travellers who might also have a penchant for thievery and consequently plan a visit to your vacated home.

If you are thinking about decorating a bedroom, there are several important factors you should take into consideration before you begin. In order to end up with a bedroom you love the look of, make sure you take your time to get it right. In this article you can find out the most important steps to take before you begin decorating your bedroom, as well as some useful decorating tips for once you start.

Firstly, decide upon a theme. There are many interior décor themes out there to choose from, so the most important thing is to choose one that will reflect your tastes and fit with the look of the rest of your home. If you want to go wild you can choose a Mexican theme or a Wild West theme. Of course, if you are decorating your bedroom first, you can let whatever look you choose for this room dictate the theme of the whole home.

Classic and traditional styles are ideal if you want a homely, warm and welcoming bedroom. Choose key pieces such as antique lamps and cosy rugs to signify the look. Art deco is a quirky and fun look for a bedroom; choose retro children’s beds if you are decorating a young one’s bedroom with this theme. You’ll find a great selection at Sleepmasters.co.uk. If you are after a more modern bedroom, the contemporary design theme is the ideal look for you. Choose monochrome pieces of furniture and art to really finish off the look. The main thing to consider when choosing a look for your bedroom is whether you can live with it day in, day out.

Once you have decided upon a theme, practical considerations should be taken into account. How will you transport the furniture you need? Will you build your own bedroom flat pack bedroom furniture? If the latter, a great tip is to lay out everything in front of you before you begin to ensure no pieces are missing before you start.

When it comes to painting, wear your old clothes and cover the furniture and floor with old sheets and newspaper to avoid any messy painting mishaps.

Finally, leave yourself enough time and enlist the help you need from friends and family. There’s nothing guaranteed to scupper your plans for a beautiful bedroom more than a rushed job.

Houses nowadays often have relatively small bedrooms even if the rooms downstairs are large. However, with a few tricks when furnishing and decorating you can make the most of the smallest of rooms.

by sarahridgley

Here are our tips to maximise your space and fool the eye!

Remove clutter which always makes a room look smaller than it actually is. Be creative with your storage solutions (pretty baskets on shelves, under-bed storage drawers etc) so that your room does not look cramped.

Consider fitted bedroom furniture such as the range made by Wren Bedrooms rather than bulky pieces such as large freestanding wardrobes. Fitted wardrobes with mirrored doors give the illusion of even more space. Make sure they have a good mixture of hanging rails, drawers and shelves.

If you really need to have a TV in your bedroom, opt for a flat screened one that can be mounted on the wall. Similarly, if you feel you need music in the bedroom, avoid stereo systems that take up a lot of room and choose an iPod docking station instead.

Fussy curtains can make the room look cramped so consider roller or Roman blinds instead.

Make your furniture work for you e.g. choose a bedside unit with drawers. If your problem room is a spare bedroom which is only used occasionally choose a futon or sofa bed.

For children’s bedrooms a loft bed can be a godsend. With the bed up in the air you have room for a desk or settee underneath.

When choosing a colour scheme for a small bedroom stick to white ceilings and light coloured walls. Avoid at all costs big patterns on wallpaper. If you really want to incorporate a dark colour into your decor restrict it to a small rug or a couple of cushions.

While you may not want a permanent transformation in your home for Halloween, you’ll definitely want to decorate your property, especially if you’ve got little ones to please.

Photo: Marissa Babin

Traditionally, colours associated with the Pagan event tend to include orange and black, with green and purple tending to be linked with witches, but all of these are perfectly apt if you’re decorating. Whether you’re making your home Halloween themed to entertain children or adults, you’ll need to have some basic things strewn around to make sure it looks the part.

Make some fake cobwebs and hang those from bed frames and canopies – if you look for beds for sale, you’re bound to find a style which suits decorating idea. Obviously, the bonus of looking for beds for sale now is that they’ll last you a while, so you won’t need to worry about going shopping for one again any time soon. You’ll want plenty of other accessories around your home too for the Halloween theme to really take hold. As well as cobwebs, put some life-sized skeletons around the place and maybe even some black cat silhouettes. You want the house to look as creepy and scary as possible, so maybe even put some ghosts and ghouls around the place.

No Halloween-themed event would be complete without some party games. Old classics like apple bobbing are bound to go down a treat, along with mummifying some of the party guests and a pumpkin carving competition.

Be sure to make everyone dress up for the party as well – adults included – there’s no point in you spending all that time decorating unless all your guests get into the spirit as well.

There is something really satisfying about renovating your own home. Watching the building change from the state it was in when you bought it to something approaching your dream home is a fantastic experience and one which is often a once in a lifetime journey. Daunting though it may seem when you first begin, there are some jobs which can very quickly make a big difference.

Photo: j l t

If you have the luxury of working on the property whilst it is empty then doing remedial works such as re-wiring or plumbing are achieved more easily, and empty rooms are much easier to decorate too. One of the projects which you might tackle fairly early on in the process is the wood work such as skirting, architraves, doors and floors. Replacing interior doors with hardwood doors throughout will instantly lift the house to be something special, and matching that with new woodwork elsewhere gives every room a fresh new look. Repairing plaster and starting your interior design scheme from a blank canvas will have much the same effect.

Engineered wood flooring is a great option if you are going to tackle the work yourself. Easier to lay than solid wood boards, it will also react less to the influences of heat and humidity. In this way it is also an appropriate material for more rooms of the house and certain types can even be installed over under floor heating for the ultimate in comfort.

Renovation projects can go array if you try to do things in the wrong order so make sure you know what needs to be done at each stage. Tackle the house as a whole and benefit from the savings to be made by engaging trades once for the whole house rather than for each room individually. Enjoy it, and make your house a home!

So, what do you think this article might be about then? Hmmm… difficult one… well, not really! Proportion is one of those interior design essentials which many people assess instinctively rather than applying any science, let alone a ruler. The relationship between the size of a space and the things in it is a key factor which will determine the look and feel of any room, regardless of anything else you do with colours or textures and so on.

Photo: These Days Blog

We are all able to identify the basics: sparse furnishings create a minimalist look, overstuffed furniture a cosy feel and so on but what about the more subtle spacial relationships. For example, if you are purchasing new bedroom furniture to revamp you bedroom you may want a particular piece to become the focal point. To do this, you need to make a bold statement and make sure that the rest of the pieces in the room don’t ‘fight’ visually. A huge and ornate four poster bed will look fantastically dramatic in a large bedroom, but needs to be surrounded by plainer furniture to really present it to the greatest effect. In a smaller room you may decide to feature a large, elaborate mirror which will change the proportions of the room through reflections alone.

Mattresses are an interesting one from the point of view of proportion: low down and light indicate a quiet, understated personality inhabiting the bedroom whereas high up and luxuriously deep says ‘climb aboard!’ and hints at a more flamboyant occupant. I bet you are thinking about your own bedroom right now…! If you are chewing your lip then maybe a trip to the furniture store is in order this weekend.

Proportion is as important factor to consider whichever room in your house has come under scrutiny so pay attention to the size and space of all the elements you wish to incorporate and how they will work within the constraints of the available space and you won’t go far wrong.

One of the most important things about a kitchen is that it functions as a kitchen. You could have all the fancy fittings and fixtures in the world, but if you have no work space on which to prepare a meal or nowhere for your washing machine to go you will soon recognise the major flaws in the room and that with kitchens functionality really is king.

No more so than in assembled kitchens is it vital that you get the right lighting solution. Not only will you spend hours frustrated by dim lighting when you are trying to work, but it could actually be hazardous to your safety – think sharp knives, poor visibility and over-zealous chopping… need I say more. To bring more light into your luxury kitchen there are several things you can do. Firstly, if you do not already have them then consider spot or strip lights underneath your wall units to better illuminate the work surfaces. An alternative to this would be wall or ceiling mounted spots angled specifically at your key areas, however be aware of casting a shadow across the room if you are back lit.

Another easy way of making your kitchen a lighter, brighter place is to allow more light through your windows and doors. Replace solid internal doors with glass panelled ones, and where security allows do the same with any external doors too. Available light through windows can be maximised by removing curtains, nets and blinds entirely or simply by switching to a lighter and finer material. Reposition plants or large ornaments as well in order to ensure you are not blocking the sunlight.

Once you’ve got your lighting right the whole room will take on a new feel and you can turn your attention to other finishing touches. The perfect kitchen is within reach so make some small changes now and appreciate the benefits everyday.

Well here we are in the middle of another typical British summer and it is raining again. The sky is grey, the lights are on at home in the daytime and the play park is deserted. There is only one inspirational thing to come of it if you as me and that is what all this unwanted water does to the natural colours all around us. Seeing as we are all stuck in the house, thoughts have turned to interior design home improvement projects and I am picking my palette straight out of the window.

Photo: visualpanic

Stone becomes beautiful in the wet: slate takes on a greenier shine, deep red brick is astonishing and all the crystal facets in limestone seem to sparkle. Translating this into a wall finish I am tempted to marble an end wall using some glittery and super shiny touches so that the overall finish almost moves as it catches the light. Metallic double beds backed by this kind of look will appear to be all at sea and the only safe place in the storm.

It is the foliage and greenery which is particularly captivating however, the leaves are luminous and the grass positively glows. Bringing this overwhelming colour inside is a harder task as only a small quantity will have such a big impact. Nobody wants to be faced by super-king sized mattresses dressed solely in bright green so how about a combination of fresh crisp white with a delicious apple accent?

Wherever you draw your next inspiration from, don’t let natures waterlogged state be a hindrance to your creative passions. Whatever the weather there is always something to capture the imagination and turn into a masterpiece so look out of the window and see the world with new eyes – it might just lift your spirits too.

The federals are now giving tax credits to those investing money into their homes. The tax credits are eligible from the 1st of January 2009 to December 31st, 2010. It is focused on those adding energy efficient repairs to their home, in return, saving on bills and unnecessary economy pollutants. There are many gases that go into the air from residential homes. Finding ways to stop these gasses will stop adding to the green house effects. Go green and save green with the home improvement tax credits. It is time for healthy changes, and it can start with home improvements. There are standards the federals list for receiving the home improvement tax credits.
Some simple ECO Friendly home improvements can have greater effects than you would know.

Changing out all your light bulbs around the house to energy efficient fluorescent bulbs can dramatically change your energy bill. They help to save around 75% of electricity.

Have you thought about your roof lately? Using light colored shingles will reduce the heat flow to your attic, reducing excess heat entering your home. They reflect light, where the standard black shingles absorb sunlight.

Install motion detected outdoor lights to cut back on unnecessary lighting.

Secure all running sources of water like a faucet that leaks, or busted pipes. Reduce your shower times and turn the water off while brushing your teeth. Replace your shower heads with a low flow shower head.

Changing out your air filters on a regular basis is very important.

Replace your A/C unit with an energy star rated unit. Savings on your cooling and heating bill will drop drastically.

If you have electronics like computers and TVs that stay plugged into the outlets overnight, consider using a power strip outlet. It halts the flow of electricity, keeping your plugged in electronics from giving off unnecessary energy.
