This is a tale of how I learned – again – how important it is to do preventive maintenance on a house. I certainly want to keep everything in good working order, but sometimes I slip up.

Just as the heating season started in earnest I noticed an odor that seemed to be coming from the basement. I ignored it for a day or two, thinking it would pass, as many smells do. By the third day I couldn’t ignore it any more. I went down to the basement and noticed a little oil around the fittings on the hose from the oil tanks to the furnace. The drip pan was full. The biggest investment most people make in their lives is their home.  They not only spend money on the house, but also plenty of time and effort.  Once your house is just the way you want it, you want to make sure that any guest you have over gets to see what you have done to the place.  During the warmer months, you may begin entertaining outdoors.  That does not mean your guests will not get to see the nicer aspects of your home.  It simply means you may have to highlight the house in order for them to notice.
