Two’s Company

We’ve had a happy accident in our house: baby number three is on the way and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Having thought we’d got past all those nappies, prams, sleepless nights and baby grows with the older two just at school. Now we’ve got used to the news we are really excited about doing it all again. There is just one problem… we have run out of bedrooms and really aren’t in a position to move house. The only solution is to convince our children to share a bedroom and convert the smallest bedroom into a nursery.

This may not sound too bad as many children share rooms and quite often really enjoy it. However, we have a little boy and a little girl rather than two of the same sex and so the idea is being received with mixed reviews. How do we reconcile pink fairy princess decorating ideas with a love of cars, robots and all things sporty? A Touch of Gold

Sometimes only decadence will do in the bedroom, and if you are looking to create an opulent space to rest and recline in then you can’t go far wrong using the colour gold. Although a tricky colour to use over a large area, it is a perfect accent hue and can work well with a modern or traditional design scheme. Here are a few ways to add a touch of gold to your bedroom:

Well, perhaps not an actual nightclub – but how about a teenager or students bedroom which is inspired by music culture? It is very hard from a decorating perspective to create a room which meets the transition from child to adult without being too old, too young or actually just too patronising. Perhaps at this time in life more than any other though your young adult’s bedroom is more than just a place to sleep and their need for self expression in their own personal space is at its most heightened.

Taking their musical tastes as a starting point for creating the right look is a great way to get inspired and involve them in the project too. It might be that a certain band, DJ or group is a favourite and they already project a certain image in terms of colour palette and styling. Perhaps a whole musical genre would work better or simply one gig poster or album cover. Whatever the starting point you can build from there: drop the mattresses onto the floor and paint in blacks and greys for a heavy metal fan, introducing a leather chair perhaps and some chrome and glass furniture.
