Types of Swimming Pool Heating Devices

When you install a swimming pool, you have to make a number of choices, and among those choices is a very important one, the heating device. Swimming pool heating is a very important aspect as it makes swimming comfortable in winters. It is very important to choose a good swimming pool heater because heating cost is a major constituent of the total expenditure incurred in operating of a swimming pool.

A number of swimming pool heating devices are available in the market, and choosing from those is an important decision to make. Here are a few details about the common heating devices, to help you in making a choice.

There are basically three types of swimming pool heaters: electric heat pumps, gas heaters and solar heaters. Each type of swimming pool heater has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Gas heaters:

Gas heaters are the most commonly used swimming pool heaters. They run with natural gas or with propane. Propane tanks are mounted above or below the ground. Gas heaters have thermostat sensors, so you do not have to monitor them continuously during operation. Nowadays, gas heaters are available which have efficiency of almost 90%. If gas heaters are used constantly, then the operating costs can become very high. These heaters are perfect for those swimming pool owners who use the heaters occasionally. Proper installation and ventilation is very important in case of gas heaters to avoid any accidents.

Electric heat pumps:

These are eco-friendly devices for swimming pool heating and are cheaper than gas heaters. These work by extracting free heat from the ambient air. The heat pump draws heat from the surrounding air that is at a higher temperature as compared to the swimming pool water. The heat pumps work on a vapour compression cycle, and their working can be compared to the inverse of a household air-conditioner. Electric heat pumps help in maintaining a consistent temperature of the swimming pool water irrespective of the surrounding temperature.

Solar heaters:

These heaters use solar energy for heating the pool water and, thus, are very economical in operation. The existing pool pump is used to pump the water to a solar heater which is placed on the roof top. One disadvantage of solar heaters and that is they do not operate during night and cloudy days. However, a storage system can be used to store the water that is heated during daytime. There is an upper limit on the temperature achieved by using these heaters so they cannot be used in very cold weather.

When it comes to efficiency, heat pumps have an edge over other types of heating devices. Gas heaters cost less than other heaters, but their operating cost is more as compared to the other types of heaters. Solar heaters are the most cost-effective type, but they might not be as effective as other heaters. While choosing a swimming pool heater, a number of factors have to be considered such as the location, the desired temperature of the water and the size of the swimming pool.
